NEW! RIS is now filtering the following viruses from our e-mail server...

This page is for us to notify you about events that may have an effect on your Internet service. Check here occasionally to stay current with what's going on.

1. Runestone Telephone Association customers - You are now connecting to3Com/US Robotics 56K modems! You must have an x2 or V.90 56K compatible modem (we would suggest a 3Com or US Robotics brand modem for best results) to connect with us at speeds greater than 33.6 Kbps and, as they say, your mileage may vary. We have found that this technology works well and provides connection speeds in the 40-48 Kbps range on a fairly consistent basis. There are some conditions that will prevent 56K from working. Please check out the U.S. Robotics x2 Capability Line Test Page or call us before investing in a 56K modem.

2. REA-ALP customers - The new "Premium Digital" Internet service is here!  Included as a feature of our unlimited service, this new system utilizes the standard v.90 technology, which is theoretically capable of achieving connect speeds of up to 53 Kbps. In the real world, we have seen speeds of 40 to 50 Kbps, which is still excellent performance. Give us a call today!

3. Parents - If you would like to use the "Content Advisor" feature of the Microsoft Internet Explorer (ver. 3.0 or higher), our web site is now rated by RSAC. (We don't expect that you will find any offensive content here, it just makes it easier to navigate our site with the Content Advisor turned on when we have been rated.) To turn on this feature, bring up the Internet Explorer and click on "Help" at the top of the screen. Click on "Index" and search for the word "Content". You should find instructions regarding the Content Advisor feature. If you have difficulty with this, please contact us.

4. Do you know someone who wants WebTV (TM) but doesn't want to pay for a long distance telephone call to use it? Have them contact us. If they live in our service area we can get them surfing with a local call!

5. Do you know someone who subscribes to AOL (America On Line) and is still paying long distance charges? Have them contact us. If they live in our service area we can offer them a better way to connect with no long distance telephone charges!

6. Beware of Lightning - Click here to read our tips and suggestions.

7. Melissa Virus - A new virus was discovered on 3/26/99.  It is called Melissa (or W97M_Melissa) and could be quite a headache (or nightmare) if your computer is or becomes infected.  Keep in mind that this virus doesn't actually cause any damage (as far as we know) but could be rather troublesome for yourself and people you email regularly.   Runestone Internet has already taken steps to prevent you from getting this virus, read this page for a description.

8. Happy99 Internet "worm" - For information on how to remove this virus/worm, try our list of instructions.

9. Glenwood customers - We now have more lines and a Glenwood telephone number for you to use. If you live in Glenwood, please call the Runestone Telephone business office (800-986-6602) for more information. Thank you.

10. Lowry and Farwell customers - You are now able to call Kensington for your internet connection.  Please call our office at 1-800-986-6602 for more information.

11. Server Upgrade Completed on 11/3/99 - We have replaced our main file server with a bigger, faster, Y2K compliant model. This provides additional room for the ever-increasing flow of email and more speed to authenticate more modems! But, in all honesty, we just didn't want to start the new millennium with a server failure.

For those who are technically inclined, here is more information about the new server:

12. Glenwood Improvements (again!) - We have recently doubled the number of lines available in the Glenwood area.  We would like to move all customers in Glenwood to a new phone number to make use of the new lines.  Please call our office (283-6655) for the phone number or assistance with changing to the new number.

13. New Technical Support numbers for Runestone Telephone customers.  We have recently added local phone numbers for technical support.  These numbers ring directly to our helpdesk technicians.  Please click here for a list of numbers.
